Comet Backup Linux Disk Image Backup Snapshot Driver Rejects Kernel ≥ 6.18

Symptoms

  • Disk Image Backup completes with one of the following warnings:

PRODUCT_WARN: Failed to install the Linux Disk Image snapshot driver: Linux kernel version '7.0.0' is too new (requires < 6.18.0)

PRODUCT_WARN: Failed to skip free disk space from Disk... partition '/' (EXT4): failed to get free blocks: mount failed... Volume backup may be unexpectedly large.

  • Without a snapshot, Comet falls back to a rolling backup.

Cause

Comet's snapshot driver does not support kernel 6.18 or higher. Work to update the snapshot driver is tracked with the ID COMET-60327.

Resolution

A rolling backup of a mounted volume cannot be relied upon for consistency.

If an image of disk is needed of an endpoint with an unsupported kernel, take a file level backup, and database backup if any are present, in addition to the Disk Image backup.
