Error during backup or retention pass: Out of memory error encountered. Temporary files are being used to reduce RAM consumption.

Symptoms

Error message pops up during backup or retention pass:

CONFIG_TEXT: Out of memory error encountered
Temporary files are being used to reduce RAM consumption. The performance of this job may be reduced. 

Cause

The Comet Backup agent ran out of memory, and started the task again with temporary files instead.

Resolution

Apply one of the solutions below:

• Solution 1: Allow the job to complete while using temporary files. The job will be significantly slower than storing temporary files in RAM.
• Solution 2: Increase the amount of RAM available to the endpoint, allowing it to store the entire deduplication index in RAM.
• Solution 3: If several devices back up to the same Storage Vault, consider splitting them across two or more Storage Vaults. Splitting is only worth doing if it would reduce the total size of the vault. A smaller Storage Vault requires less memory to process during a backup or retention pass, which may prevent this error from recurring.
