Question
How to restore data from a Comet backup on another device?
Answer
To restore data to another device (for example, when the original device is unavailable, or when you want to restore a disk image to a different test machine), run the restore from the Comet Backup desktop application on that device.
- Install the Comet Backup desktop application on the new device.
- Log in as the same user that created the backups on the original device.
- Click on the Restore button.
-
Select the Storage Vault containing the backed-up data, and click Next.
Note: If the Storage Vault of the original device is not in the list, tick the checkbox below the drop-down menu to show the Storage Vaults from other devices. When the user is configured to provision a Storage Vault for each user, only the Storage Vaults assigned to the current device are shown by default.
- Select the Protected Item that you want to restore, and click Next.
- (Optional) Unfold the Protected Item to pick a snapshot other than the most recent
- (Optional) Use the Search button to search for files to restore
- Select which files to restore, and click Next.
- (Optional) By default, all files are restored. You can use the "Choose files" radio option to select individual files or folders to restore.
An administrator can start the restore from the web-based Management Console. The restore runs on a device that has the Comet Backup agent installed.
- In the Management Console, open the Actions menu for the device that will run the restore (the new device).
- Select the Storage Vault of the device that ran the backups.
The Management Console only triggers a restore on a device where the agent is installed, and the restore destination is the original path or a custom path on that device. There is no option to download the restored data, such as a disk image (VHDX), to the computer from which you are logged in to the Management Console. To get the data onto a different computer, install the Comet Backup agent on that computer, log in with the credentials of the user that owns the backups, and run the restore as described above.
