How to upgrade a Self-Hosted Comet Server directly to the latest version in Comet Backup

Question

How to upgrade a Self-Hosted Comet Server directly to the latest version in Comet Backup, and whether it must be upgraded through intermediate versions.

Answer

A direct upgrade to the latest version is supported, including from very old versions. Upgrading in stages is not needed.

  1. Take a Comet Server self-backup. It costs nothing and is only needed if you must roll back to the previous version.
  2. Download the installer of the latest version for your platform via https://account.cometbackup.com/downloads
  3. Run the new installer on the server over the existing installation. The configuration is preserved.
    • Windows: run the new .exe installer.
    • Linux: install the new .deb or .rpm package.

# sudo apt install ./cometd-*amd64.deb

# sudo dnf localinstall ./cometd-*.x86_64.rpm

If the software was installed via APT or RPM repositories, updates will be deployed automatically with system updates.
