Unable to Install Comet Backup Agent on Synology NAS (ARMv7 Architecture Error)

Symptoms

When attempting to install the Comet Backup Agent SPK package on a Synology NAS device (such as the DS218j running DSM 7.x), the installation fails with the error message:

CONFIG_TEXT: Failed to install the package.
ERROR: No binary available for this architecture ('armv7l'). Please report this error to your support contact.

Cause

This error occurs on ARMv7 Synology NAS models (e.g., DS218j, DS216, and other Marvell Armada 385-based devices) starting in version 26.4.5 and continuing through 26.7.x and Voyager 26.8.2. Version 26.4.4 and earlier are confirmed working.

The SPK's install script attempts to determine which binary to symlink. On affected devices, the ARM binary traps at startup, so exits with the generic "No binary available for this architecture" error — meaning the failure is not actually about a missing binary, but a binary that crashes immediately when run.

The likely cause is that the 26.4.4 and 26.7.1 builds changed how the ARMv7/ARMv6 binaries are compiled, introducing an instruction these older CPUs don't support. 

This is tracked in COMET-60447 and is still under investigation. Root cause has not yet been confirmed by Development.

Resolution

To resolve this issue and successfully deploy the backup agent to your Synology NAS:

1. Downgrade to Version 26.4.4: Obtain and install Comet Backup agent version 26.4.4, which includes supported binaries for ARM 32-bit (armv7l) architectures.

2. Re-attempt Installation: Upload the SPK file generated from version 26.4.4 via Synology Package Center and proceed with the installation process.
