How to apply backup agent hot-fixes?

Question

How to apply backup agent hot-fixes?

Answer

When you report an issue to Comet staff, every attempt is made to reproduce the issue in-house. Once the issue is reproduced, we can confirm a fix internally.

Sometimes an issue depends on specific environment details that are infeasible to recreate. In these situations, support staff may ask you to run a "hotfix" version of Comet that contains experimental changes to test a potential resolution for your issue.

Applying backup-tool.exe hotfixes on Windows

Copy the provided patch-tool.exe file to the impacted endpoint and run it as administrator.

The executable will stop the Comet services and replace the backup-tool.exe and backup-interface.exe binaries in your installation directory without affecting your branding.

Applying backup-tool hotfixes on Linux and Synology DSM
  1. Copy the provided patch-tool.gz file to the impacted endpoint.
  2. Decompress and untar the binary.
  3. Run chmod +x ./patch-tool to make the binary executable.
  4. Execute the binary as root: sudo ./patch-tool

The patch tool will find the startup script in systemd directories or /opt, stop the processes, replace the backup-tool and backup-interface binaries in the installation directory, and start the services again.

Applying backup-tool hotfixes on macOS
  1. Exit the Comet Backup app from the system taskbar
  2. Stop Comet's background services
    • sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/backup.delegate.plist
    • sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/backup.elevator.plist
  3. Replace files inside /Applications/Comet Backup.app/Contents/MacOS/backup-tool with updated version
  4. Restart all stopped background services
    • sudo launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/backup.elevator.plist
    • sudo launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/backup.delegate.plist
  5. Restart the Comet Backup app
