Connecting to SMB/UNC storage with correct credentials fails: The specified network password is not correct

Symptoms

  • Connecting to SMB/UNC storage with correct credentials fails with one or more of the error messages:

PRODUCT_WARN: The user name or password is incorrect.

PRODUCT_WARN: Creating the directory failed because the specified path is invalid.

PRODUCT_WARN: The specified network password is not correct.

  • The username and password is known to be valid on the SMB server.

Cause

The SMB server expects the credentials to include the hostname.

Resolution

Solution 1

Add the hostname, IP address, or domain name of the storage server in the username field, in the following format:

CONFIG_TEXT: 10.1.1.1\JohnDoe
SMBServer\JohnDoe
ADDomain\JohnDoe

Solution 2

Enable the SFTP or S3 protocol on the storage server, and use it for Comet instead.

Both protocols support explicitly entering credentials, avoiding this issue.
